A bumper festival line-up at Lincoln Castle this year includes the chance to get social with a great British summer picnic – as well as celebrate the best of Lincolnshire food and drink.
This summer will see a new seasonal gathering celebrating food, culture and community, all set in the heart of medieval Lincoln Castle.
By day, visitors can gather and enjoy a sunny spot on the wide-open grassy grounds within the imposing stone Castle walls, while discovering and indulging in the region’s finest produce.
By night, there’s a chance to kick back to a summer soundtrack with craft beers and artisan spirits as well as sample eats to suit every taste.
Plus, for one night only during the event, the popular Medieval Wall Walk will open late, offering a chance for visitors to enjoy the spectacular evening views across the Castle and the city.
Picnic Social will be staged in the landscaped grounds of the 950-year-old Castle between Saturday 23 July and Sunday 7 August.
Providing an eighth of Britain’s food, Lincolnshire can lay claim to being the ‘food capital of the UK’, and this new event will showcase food and drink from right across the county.
Featuring stalls selling breads, charcuterie, cheeses, cakes, biscuits, gluten free treats, fine wines, craft ales and artisan spirits, along with street food, the Castle grounds will be free to enjoy from 10am to 5pm, inclusive of the Picnic Social areas.
And for those who want to enjoy the event with their four-legged friend, there will be the chance to bring along your furry companion to the Dog Friendly weekend on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 July.
The evening Medieval Wall Walk will be on Friday 29 July, 6pm to 9pm, with pre-booking essential.
While the grounds are free to enter, normal admission charges apply to the Castle’s paid attractions: the Medieval Wall Walk providing panoramic views across the city; a Victorian Prison, where visitors can follow in the footsteps of prisoners; and the underground Magna Carta Vault, home to an original 1215 Magna Carta, one of only four still surviving today.
The castle, built in 1068, is already one of Lincoln’s most popular destinations and a venue for a host of events during the year
For 2022, other events will feature live music and family fun throughout the summer holidays, covering Bank Holidays, key celebrations, and iconic sporting events. Launching with the Great British Outdoor Picnic – a chance for people to come together over the Queen’s Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend in June – the Castle’s festival season will end with the return of the quirky Steampunk Festival over the August Bank Holiday weekend.
In addition to the summer festivals, Lincoln Castle’s grounds – popular with families for relaxing and picnicking – host various events through the year, including the city’s famous Christmas Market.
