Where do you find the perfect cuppa?
It’s elementary: simply visit a city where science has played a major role throughout its history…
Opened just 14 months ago by husband and wife team Pete and Stephanie Marris, Elements serves speciality tea and coffee in equal measures, while adhering closely to a philosophy that sets this café well apart from the norm.
Located in Derby city centre, it has taken its name from the Enlightenment Group – a scientific, economic, political and cultural manifestation of the Age of Enlightenment. Pete – with a background, and a PhD, in science – and history buff Stephanie took the best part of 18 months of tea tasting to find the best possible cup of Irish Breakfast for a café, which is also the only one in Derby listed in the latest edition of the Independent Coffee Guide.
A huge part of Elements’ philosophy is to integrate this thriving café into the local community. Another is to tantalise the taste buds of its customers, within an environment designed to celebrate the social side of food and drink.
Regular workshops are organised – including one for “Accessible Tea Tasting” – are on offer here, from £20 a head; standard tasting notes and information about guest teas and coffees, adorn the walls; while Joe Wood – a chef who has worked in Michelin starred kitchens – has recently brought a regular pop-up Incognito dining to Elements, offering a full nose-to-tail range of ingredients.
Passionate that the essential elements of flavour, consistency, choice and ingredients are at the fore of everything they offer, Pete explains that they also try to use independent suppliers wherever possible.
