Burghley House stars in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein

World-wide audiences will see Burghley House in a whole different light after its starring role in Guillermo del Toro’s highly anticipated new film Frankenstein.

Scenes for the Oscar®-winning director’s new movie – featuring Oscar Isaac as Dr Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as The Monster – were shot at England’s finest Elizabethan house in September 2024.

After being screened in select cinemas during October, the movie – praised for its stunning visuals and strong performances – streams on Netflix from 7 November.

Some of the House’s most spectacular State Rooms including the Great Hall, the Bow Room, and The Old Kitchen provided the backdrop for del Toro’s reimagining of Mary Shelley’s classic tale.

The film, written and directed by del Toro, features an acclaimed cast that also includes Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, David Bradley, Lars Mikkelsen, Christian Convery, Charles Dance, and Christoph Waltz.

Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but egotistical scientist who brings a creature to life in a monstrous experiment with consequences that ultimately lead to the undoing of both the creator and his tragic creation.

Visitors exploring Burghley House today can discover the rooms featured in the movie, and experience first-hand the centuries of history that have captured the imagination of filmmakers and visitors alike.

One of the largest and grandest houses of the 16th century, Burghley combines magnificent architecture and atmospheric interiors, set within sweeping Capability Brown parkland.

This is just the latest set-jetting role for Burghley, which has previously appeared in numerous movie and TV productions, from The Flash and The Crown to Pride and Prejudice

While the House and Gardens close for the season on 2 November, the free-to-enter parkland is open daily throughout the year and offers sweeping views of the Elizabethan mansion.

The Gardens and Adventure Play are also open for additional weekends, on 8 and 9 November and 15 and 16 November. For 2026, the Gardens re-open for the new season on 14 February and the House on 14 March.
