Heritage Open Days, England’s largest festival of history and culture, returns 12-21 September 2025. Among events are a chance to visit Sir Isaac Newton’s Old Tudor Grammar School in Lincolnshire; tour the ancient Monks Walk Inn, close to Beverley Minster, in East Yorkshire; take a look behind-the-scenes of the Unpacking Project at V&A Wedgwood Collection, in Stoke-on-Trent; enjoy a rare opportunity to visit the 24-foot tunnel in the wind tunnel buildings at Farnborough in Hampshire, once a world class aerodynamic testing facility; and browse the Local History Book Fairstaged in the stunning surroundings of Hull Minster.
This Whodunnit is likely to be very Grand
The New Vic Theatre in Staffordshire will produce the world premiere production of The Grand Babylon Hotel by famed English author Arnold Bennett this autumn. Running from Saturday 13 September to Saturday 4 October, the production marks the first time Bennett’s stylish whodunnit has ever been adapted for the stage and will form part of Stoke-on-Trent’s centenary celebrations.
Strap on your boots for a beer walk
Celebrating the ‘Great Outdoors’, the 15th annual Walking East Yorkshire Festival returns 6 to 14 September. Among the events is the ever-popular Boots and Beer Walk, taking in valleys as well as a short stretch of the Yorkshire Wolds Way National Trail, ending with the chance to sample a couple of the award-winning Wold Top beers. The walk, on 11 September, costs £15, including two half pint samples, or soft drinks, and a savoury buffet.
100 Years, 100 Faces
A major public art project is honouring the people who have helped shape Stoke-on-Trent over the past 100 years with a once-in-a-century celebration. The ‘100 Years, 100 Faces’ mural will be unveiled during a special weekend, taking place 13–14 September 2025. Commissioned as part of the city’s centenary celebrations by Stoke-on-Trent City Centre BID, it will highlight both well-known figures and unsung heroes who have contributed to the city’s story over the past century. Events are planned on the Saturday, with the mural on display from Sunday.
Pitch Up and Carry On…
Visitors to the National Motor Museum at Beaulieu can discover the largely untold story of how caravans supported the national effort during the Second World War. The Caravan and Motorhome Club Collection has teamed up with the Museum to stage Pitch Up and Carry On, which will run from 13 September 2025 to summer 2026. From mobile RAF offices and army briefing rooms to air raid shelters, caravans became crucial tools in wartime Britain.
Where Art Flows with Nature…
Houghton Lodge Gardens, near Stockbridge, in Hampshire is staging its first-ever major sculpture exhibition. Blending contemporary art and the natural beauty of the historic riverside gardens in the heart of the Test Valley, Fluvii (Latin for ‘flow’) features over 50 original works by 16 artists. Running until 30 September, the exhibition and trail is included with standard garden admission (from £11.50 online booked in advance).
