Walk this way to see Lincoln in a new light this Christmas

An illuminated medieval wall walk, a stroll down Candy Cane Lane and two resident dragons… Lincoln aims to spring a few seasonal surprises this Christmas.

Annual highlight Lincoln Castle Illuminated is returning for 2023 with organisers promising that the event will be bigger and brighter than ever.

From Friday 8 until Saturday 23 December, the grounds of the imposing Norman castle will again be festooned with festive lights and colourful Christmas features.

Back by popular demand is the Illuminated Wall Walk offering spectacular night-time views across the city from the medieval battlements – as well as a stunning perspective of the floodlit Lincoln Cathedral.

One of the Castle’s most dramatic features, the walk stretches a third of a mile around the stone curtain wall and December is the only time it is open to the public after dark.

Along with the specially-lit Wall Walk, this year’s festive treats within the Castle grounds also include a ‘Mini Polar Express’ and traditional fairground rides, while visitors will also be able to take a trip down Candy Cane Lane… and send season’s greetings to resident castle dragons Lucy and Norman.

Lucy – a sculpture of a giant mythical dragon designed to appear as if it is breaking through the medieval walls – flew off in January this year after wowing crowds during 2022, but made a grand return this summer, joined by Norman, with his fiery coloured scales.

Creating a striking backdrop within the Castle, both sculptures are set to join in the festivities by greeting visitors to the illuminated grounds.

As no Christmas event is complete without festive food, local vendors will be offering sweet treats and winter warmers, including hot chocolate and mulled wine.

There’s even a chance for dog owners to join in the fun with their four-legged friends, thanks to special Explore with Paws dog friendly days on the 13 and 20 December.

Tickets for the full Lincoln Castle Illuminated experience cost £11 adults, £6 children and £28 for a family. Grounds only admission costs £3 per person.

With limited capacity and timed entry to Lincoln Castle Illuminated, early booking is recommended.
