The man who has brought Trentham Gardens to life with his range of stunning bronze wildlife sculptures will be the award-winning Estate’s “Artist in Residence” from June 10 to 16.
Having helped to boost Trentham’s reputation as an open-air art gallery, the incredible installation of bronze wildlife sculptures by artist David Meredith was originally expected to be based in the gardens for just six months when it first went on show last year.
The full installation remains in place “by popular demand”, however; and the man behind them will be visiting Trentham Estate in June to create a brand-new masterpiece during his tenure as Artist in Residence.
During his residency, visitors can meet Meredith, and even join him on daily walking tours to uncover the stories behind the woodland deer, swimming salmon, owls, giant tree-frogs emerging from the undergrowth and pheasants rising from the prairie planting.
The eye-catching installation – entitled Nature in Bronze – features a full range of Meredith’s work and is now expected to remain in place through to September 1. Access is included with standard garden admission (http://www.trentham.co.uk/trentham-gardens/admission-and-prices).
Smaller items of his work are also on show, and for sale, in Glazed Art – one of the shops in the recently expanded Trentham Shopping Village.
Meredith has been sculpting professionally for more than 20 years, starting his career in the pewter, giftware and retail sectors before specialising in bronze.
Described as the “garden make-over of the decade” byThe Daily Telegraph, Staffordshire’s Trentham Gardens also took the title of the UK’s “Garden of the Year” in the annual BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards in 2015; and was once again awarded a Gold Accolade by VisitEngland in February 2018, in recognition of the quality visitor experience on offer.
Among the growing number of artworks which complement the natural beauty of the Estate is a statue of Perseus, which enjoyed a starring role at the Royal Academy of Art’s exhibition entitled “Bronze” in London in 2012.
Elsewhere visitors can enjoy artist Robin Wright’s perennially popular and eye-catchingFairy Trail at any time of the year.
As with other attractions and venues across Stoke-on-Trent & The Potteries, The Trentham Estate is currently enhancing its range of events and activities for cultural tourists as part of ‘Stoke-on-Trent’s Cultural Destinations Programme’, which aims to attract even more visitors to the area. Meredith’s Artist in Residency is the first example of this.
