There’s something very shellfish about these seafood celebrations

Europe’s ‘lobster capital’ is set to host a new-look, two-day seafood festival this summer celebrating Bridlington’s fishing and maritime heritage.

The East Yorkshire harbour is the UK’s biggest shellfish port, with more than 80% of crabs and lobsters landed there ending up on the Continent.

But a growing campaign aims to offer more of its catch to locals and visitors, creating demand for Bridlington Bay Lobster within the UK.

Now this new style event is set to be staged in the resort’s town centre on Friday 26 and Saturday 27 July – with the popular monthly King Street Food Festival on the Sunday extending the culinary celebration.

Showcasing Bridlington’s fishing heritage, the Seafood Festival will offer visitors the chance to try locally caught seafood, including Bridlington Bay Lobster.

The free-to-enter festival will also feature food demonstrations from local chefs and fishmongers, street food, live entertainment, workshops and stalls.

Fishing provides a huge boost to the town’s economy, with around 300 tonnes of lobster landed at Bridlington Harbour, and the overall value of the fishing industry estimated at around £20m per year.

Now the hope is that a tourism spin-off will help not only promote the value of East Yorkshire’s fishing industry, but also bring an extra boost to the resort’s economy in future years.

Tourism chiefs are also looking at other potential opportunities to mark Bridlington’s maritime heritage, including new trails.
