Forget tulips from Amsterdam, award-winning Trentham Gardens is the place to see an explosion of colour as the Staffordshire attraction’s Spring Bulb Festival bursts to life.
After a cold start to spring, the tulip displays are now coming into full bloom, creating a colourful mosaic as part of the popular annual spring floral display.
A kaleidoscope of colours is filling the pots dotted around the 10 acres of Italianate Gardens for the Festival, which, this year, has the inspirational theme of renewal and freedom.
One of England’s most visited paid for gardens, Trentham, on the edge of Stoke-on-Trent, offers visitors a chance to escape into the Great Outdoors and enjoy time together outside the house, while being ‘wowed’ by the sights, sounds and smells of spring.
First staged in 2019, the annual Spring Bulb Festival has become a ‘must see’ event, and after having to take the event online in 2020 because of lockdown, the popular tourist attraction has welcomed back visitors this year with new displays.
Trentham’s talented team of gardeners has been busy throughout autumn planting more than 61,000 extra bulbs – and fittingly for 2021, ‘Liberation’, ‘Escape’, ‘Happy Family’ and ‘Day Dream’ are amongst the aptly-named bulbs to spot – and hundreds of pots are now brimming with colourful flowers.
Tulips are, of course, among the stars of the show for the Festival, but other highlights are new displays in the Rose Border and Trellis Walk.
The Rose Border is a favourite sunny location for photos and outdoor socialising, with 5,000 spring and early summer flowering bulbs combined with more than 12,000 bulbs planted in British manufactured pots to create the highly popular ‘pink walk’.
For the Perseus Walk, more than 12,000 bulbs, provide a rich colour palette. In addition, benches are surrounded by pots filled with colourful displays, offering the perfect spot for visitors to sit and enjoy views across the lake, woodlands and the Italian Gardens.
For 2021, a Spring Activity Pack for children has also been launched, to pre-book or purchase on arrival, featuring a History Hunt, Fairy Trail, pencil, sticker, as well as a Spring Wildlife Spotter, giving youngsters a chance to spot a rainbow of spring flowers.
