A new light display created by an award-winning British visual artist is bringing an added dash of colour to Cleethorpes’ North Promenade.
Around 500 metres of waterfront in the Lincolnshire resort are now lit up with an artistic display of lights as part of a regeneration and public art scheme.
The new animated installation is active every day from sunset until midnight and then just before dawn, and sweeps along the North Promenade, a stretch of sandy beach with a traditional style promenade running alongside.
Shining a new light on this part of the resort, the lighting aims to brighten up the stretch of promenade for visitors walking by the sea or stopping a while to take in the views of the wide bay leading out onto the Humber estuary and the North Sea.
Created as a site-specific installation, it was designed by visual artist Esther Rolinson whose multimedia artworks explore sensory experiences that connect us to each other and to the landscape.
Last spring ‘funky’ fitness furniture, from award-winning designers Freshwest – made up of 21 individual wooden pieces including tall wooden chairs that overlook the sea, press up benches for people to sit on, and exercise ‘loungers’ – were installed.
And that followed a scheme to create colourful illustrations on shop shutters along the seafront as part of the creative regeneration scheme.
Those visiting the North Prom out of usual shopping hours can see this ‘walk-by art gallery’, in which several premises have artworks designed by local and international artists applied to their shutters.
Since the 19th century, and the advent of the railways, Cleethorpes has been a favourite for UK-based seaside holidays, with visitors drawn to its long stretch of coastline.
As well as two promenades, Cleethorpes Pier – dating back to 1873 – is one of Lincolnshire’s most iconic venues, and now home to Papa’s Fish & Chips, offering great sea views.
Last year, fresh from winning another prestigious Blue Flag award, Cleethorpes was picked as one of the best beaches in Britain by travel experts at Trainline, Europe’s largest independent train and coach travel website and app, who ranked the resort at Number 2 in their top 100 UK beaches.
