Georgian town house collects the ‘Oscar’ for Britain’s best B&B

A Georgian mansion in the heart of the medieval minster town of Beverley, East Yorkshire, has been named Britain’s best B&B by the prestigious Good Hotel Guide.

Built in 1746 and retaining many of its original features, Newbegin House has been revealed as one of the Guide’s 10 César award winners, each recognising “consistent excellence in their field”.

Named after renowned hotelier César Ritz, and known as the ‘Oscars of the hotel industry’, the B&B of the year award is the latest accolade for the three bedroomed guest-house, which already has a ‘five star’ and ‘Gold’ rating from VisitEngland.

Minutes from the centre of Beverley – famous for its magnificent 13th century Minster and picturesque narrow cobbled streets – Newbegin House wins praise for the warm welcome from owners Walter and Nuala Sweeney.

In the award commendation, the Guide highlights how the couple treat guests as friends to share their much-loved, comfortably furnished home.

And it adds: “This Georgian town house whisks you off to a world of refinement with its handsome interiors, artwork and treasures, and walled garden. Antiques, books, curios and family photographs are set against shuttered windows, polished-wood floors, chandeliers and marble fireplaces. A warm welcome of a large pot of tea in the sitting room sets the tone; a guided tour of the ‘lovely garden’ is also offered.”

The three bedrooms are described as comfortable and eclectic, each filled with antiques and family heirlooms, including a rocking horse in one, while thoughtful extras include sherry, fresh milk, and flowers.

Not surprisingly for a VisitEngland Breakfast award winner, Newbegin House also gets top marks for its catering.

“A generous choice at breakfast ranges from omelettes and poached eggs with prosciutto to pancakes and a full Yorkshire, plus a flush of different teas. ‘Excellent value,’ concludes a reader,” the Guide reports.

Located just over 100 yards from Beverley’s Saturday Market, Newbegin House has been a B&B since 2009, and has featured in the Good Hotel Guide every year since 2016, receiving various Editor’s Choice awards for best newcomer, best value and best B&B. Prices start at £90 per night for two, or £60 per night for single occupancy.

Nestling on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, Beverley is a popular visitor destination thanks to its narrow streets, antique shops, historic buildings and a diverse range of year-round events.
