Visitors to East Yorkshire this September will be able to celebrate the ‘Great Outdoors’ with a packed programme of activities to mark the 11th Yorkshire Wolds Walking and Outdoors Festival.
Whether a walker, cyclist, horse rider, nature lover or history buff, there will be over 100 activities for all ages and abilities to mark the return of this popular festival in 2020 (12 – 20 September).
One of Britain’s top walking spots aims to showcase plenty more besides during the nine-day festival featuring everything from nature safaris and history walks to boat trips and even a Buddhist experience.
Since being launched in 2010 the Festival has grown in reputation, aiming to shine a spotlight not only on the rolling landscape, but also celebrating the rich heritage of the Yorkshire Wolds.
Designed to appeal to families, casual walkers and outdoor enthusiasts alike, this year’s Festival once again will offer relaxed strolls around market towns as well as planned long distance hikes.
While the 2020 programme is yet to be revealed, organisers are also promising historic house tours, Nordic walking, seabird strolls, as well as horse riding and cycling events.
Previous years have also seen ever-popular Boots & Beer Walk with Wold Top Brewery, organised trips on the Driffield and Pocklington canals, kayaking sessions and some unique views – from the top of Flamborough Lighthouse and the chance to climb 113 steps leading to the roof of the magnificent Beverley Minister.
Walkers can discover a little bit of ‘Hockney Country’, with walks normally offered around some of the locations that provided the inspiration for a series of paintings by one of Britain’s most iconic artists, David Hockney, such as the village of Warter, which features a subject of a famous painting by David Hockney – ‘Bigger Trees’ near Dalton Gate Cottage.
Visitors can also unlock Secret Art along the Yorkshire Wolds Way and discover poetry and paintings in the landscape, thanks to an inspirational project using an app to reveal the hidden art of the Yorkshire Wolds (www.yorkshirewoldssecretart.co.uk).
