Derby Christmas Night Market 2017

Night Markets are a relatively new concept in the UK.  You’ll come across them in fashionable areas of London, as well as some other major cities.  But do make sure you “save the date” if you’re likely to be anywhere near to Derby on Thursday, November 17.

That’s when around 200 stalls will be erected from 5pm to 10pm as Derby hosts its 2016 Christmas Night Market in the streets, and various other pop-up locations, throughout the Cathedral Quarter.

A perfect pre-Christmas shopping opportunity, it will feature local artists, craftspeople and makers selling everything from chocolate brownies and home brewed ales, to independent clothing labels and jewellery made from the best grade of silver…95% of it hand-made, and 90% of it made locally.

It’s the kind of occasion when street foods served from old Citroen vans vintage vehicles called “Dilly” and Land Rovers named “Mabel” rub shoulders with Phat Doughnuts, live music and DJ sets – all of it adding to the eclectic mix and helping to create the relaxed, lively atmosphere of the Night Market.

The mastermind behind it all is Sheena Holland, who at one time sold her vintage accessories, wedding hats, headbands and fascinators from a shop in Blacksmith’s Yard in Derby, but then saw an opportunity for other like-minded people to take their wares to market in this unusual and fun fashion.

Previously a florist in London, she cut her creative teeth making floral displays for the likes of Elton John, The Queen Mother and Michael Jackson, before launching her own business Feather Side Tiara.

Her vintage handmade designs feature antique and vintage jewellery, and have already been featured in several fashion magazines, including Vogue and most of the bridal magazines.  Among her clients are many famous names, including singers Pink and Lily Allen, Alan Carr, and dancers Clare Turton derrico and Emma Holtham.

Last year’s Christmas Night Market attracted over 20,000 visitors and 220 stallholders.

Derby Night Market on November 17 will once again be located around Sadler Gate, the Bell Hotel ballroom, Old Blacksmiths Yard, The Strand Arcade, the Avenue on The Market Place, The Guildhall Arches and Rooms and the Victorian Market Hall.  Many of the neighbouring shops will also be operating late-night opening times.
