It may be small and compact, but the medieval Minster town of Beverley, in East Yorkshire, is fast earning a top gourmet reputation and winning praise for fine dining – as well as its picturesque cobbled streets and historic architecture.
Nestling on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds, and under the shadow of its 13th century Minster, Beverley is already a popular visitor destination thanks to its narrow streets, antique shops, historic buildings anda diverse range of year-round events.
But it’s quickly becoming a hot destination for foodies too, boasting Good Food Guide and Michelin Guide rated venues, and is now also home to one of the ‘Top 100 Best Places to Eat in the UK’.
Fresh from making it into The Good Food Guide 2019, pint-sized Beverley bistro The Pig & Whistle– which only opened last year – has been named in The Sunday Timesas one of the Top 100 Best Places to Eat in the UK.
It joins Whites Restaurant, a small intimate restaurant with rooms in the heart of Beverley, included in The Good Food Guide for the 10th year as well as appearing in the Michelin Guide; and The Westwood, set in the grounds of Beverley’s former Grade II listed Georgian courthouse on the edge of town, which also wins praise once more in the new Michelin Guide.
The latest accolade for the town’s top eateries heaps praise on The Pig & Whistle, a neighbourhood bistro and charcuterie bar serving-up small plates that pack a punch, which has been praised by food critics Marina O’Loughlin and Giles Coren – who picked their favourite restaurants for The Sunday Times Magazineand The TimesTop 100. The venue also features in The Good Food Guide 2019 ‘Local Gems’ category. https://pigandwhistlebeverley.co.uk
Also celebrating its appearance in the Good Food Guide – for the 10thyear – is Whites Restaurant, opened in 2008, which is Beverley’s only Michelin and Good Food Guide rated restaurant. It aims to showcase the best of local produce and takes pride in making everything onsite in its kitchens, including breads, complimentary appetisers, cheese biscuits and petit fours. It offers two ‘surprise menus’ that change daily. www.whitesrestaurant.co.uk
Joining Whites in the 2019 Michelin Guide is The Westwood, just a short stroll from the historic market town with a picturesque setting overlooking Westwood Pasture with views across to Beverley Minster. Serving quality, modern British dishes made with the best locally sourced ingredients, it has become one of the most popular restaurants in East Yorkshire since opening in 2007. www.thewestwood.co.uk
Beverley also boasts plenty of other top places to eat as well, including an authentic taste of French patisserie. T C Patisserie,an independent French patisserie/cafe run by a French patissier, won the ‘Best Cuppa 2018’ award from Visit Hull and East Yorkshire (VHEY). www.tcpatisserie.com
Venture just a little way outside Beverley to discover even more award-winning gastronomic treats, and a 15-minute drive will bring you to East Yorkshire’s only Michelin-starred restaurant The Pipe and Glass, a former coaching inn set in the glorious surroundings of the Dalton Estate. This pub and restaurant, has gained an international reputation and now also has five luxury boutique suites. www.pipeandglass.co.uk
The Star Inn, at Sancton in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds, has also been included once again in The Good Food Guide 2019. Once a rundown brewery owned pub, it has been transformed into one of Yorkshires best-kept secrets and a top destination fine dining restaurant. www.thestaratsancton.co.uk
